What does “Forty, Unfinished” mean? I did not make it very complicated. I recently wanted a place to write, and that thought gradually led me to these two ideas. Forty is there because I have reached this stage of life, whether I avoid the fact or not. Unfinished is there because I still want to learn something new and move a little farther forward. That is more or less how the name came about.
There is no hidden philosophy behind it. By forty, many things are different. Energy and time no longer feel unlimited. Work, daily life, and the body all demand more attention than they did a few years ago. At the same time, it does not feel like the moment to stop. I still want to learn, try new things, and see whether I can make a little more progress. That is why I chose “unfinished.”
What will I write here? My practical starting point is learning, especially learning about AI. My interest in it has grown steadily. The more I read and experiment, the more I realize that it is not as distant from everyday life as it once seemed. No one can say exactly how it will change the future, but it is already entering our work and lives bit by bit. Since that is happening, I might as well study it seriously, go as far as I can, and record what I encounter along the way.
I expect to write about specific things: what I read, what I tried, what I failed to understand, where I made mistakes, which tools look exciting but feel different in real use, and which quiet tools genuinely help. I will also write about the experience of learning itself—why we keep saving things for later, why learning breaks down when life gets busy, why it sometimes feels fascinating, and why I sometimes wonder whether I am learning too slowly.
It will not be only about learning. Eventually I will write about life, work, and the ideas and understandings that have gradually taken shape over these years. A person does not live by one interest alone, and learning is always connected to one’s current circumstances. Some days I may want to write about AI. On others, it may be nothing more than a feeling that appeared at a particular moment.
That is roughly it. “Forty, Unfinished” is not complicated. I want to write down, piece by piece, the things I care about at this stage of life. I do not know how long I will write or what it will become. I will begin first and see where it goes.
